According to Mayan history, at the end of the X century Xiu Mayan people came from the north (Now the state of Tabasco) to Chakanputun (Now the state of Campeche) and forced the Itzaes to leave the city. Some of them returned to Chichen itza, others named the Cocomes founded the city of Mayapan.
During the next centuries the Cocomes were involved in many disputes with other groups, like the itzales, Xius and Pechs, for the lands and properties while the whole Mayan civilization kept growing in knowledge and greatness. On the middle of the XVI century, at the peak of the Mayan civilization, the Spanish tried to conquer them and get theirs lands for the Spanish monarchs. The last Maya to resist were the Cocomes. Leaded by Nachi Cocom, Lord of Sotuta. Even though the Spanish were superior in weapons and strategy, Nachi Cocom never surrender and took the leading part in the most violent battle between Mayan and Conquerors. Nachi Cocom, the last of all the Mayan Sovereigns, was killed fighting the invaders in Tixcocob on Thursday June 11 of 1541. A few months later the city of Merida was to be founded. |
